Historic Remington Arms factory in Ilion to shut down after nearly two centuries
Remington Arms, the country's oldest gun maker, is set to close its Mohawk Valley facility in Ilion, New York, in March 2024. The plant, which has been in operation for nearly 200 years, currently employs around 270 workers. The closure comes after the company faced temporary closures, bankruptcy, and legal pressure following the Sandy Hook school shooting. The current owners, Roundhill Group, purchased the Remington-branded gun-making business in 2021 and announced plans to move the company's headquarters to Georgia. Union officials expressed disappointment over the closure, highlighting the workers' contribution to the company's revival after bankruptcy.
