"Governors Honor Veterans with Highway Renamings, Medals, and New Legislation"

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York State has signed legislation renaming portions of the state's highway system in honor of veterans and establishing commemorative medals for the Iraq War and Afghanistan War. The highway renamings include designations for Major General Norbert J. Rappl, Sergeant Elijah A. Briggs, Chief Daniel Nimham, Corporal Derick Franklin Brinckerhoff, SP4 George Harold Fry, Lance Corporal Scott Lee Schultz, Specialist Gerald B. Penn, Specialist Peter J. Loretto Jr., John Jay High School Veterans, and Catholic War Veterans. The Iraq War Commemorative Medal is for those who served abroad from March 20, 2003, to December 31, 2021, while the Afghanistan War Commemorative Medal is for those who served from October 7, 2001, to August 30, 2021. Governor Hochul hopes these dedications and medals will honor veterans' sacrifices and ensure their legacies live on.
