"Trump Refuses to Sign Illinois Pledge Against Overthrowing Government"
President Joe Biden's campaign criticized former President Donald Trump for not signing an Illinois loyalty oath pledging not to advocate the overthrow of the government, a requirement for candidates in the state. Trump did not sign the oath when registering for the primary ballot in Illinois, despite having done so in 2016 and 2020. The oath, a remnant of the McCarthy era, also prohibits support for communism. Trump's refusal to sign was condemned by the Biden campaign, which referenced the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump faces federal criminal indictment for these alleged efforts and also an indictment in Georgia for conspiring to change the election outcome.
