IndyCar unlocks a faster, lighter era with the IR-28 for 2028
IndyCar has unveiled the IR-28, a ground-up redesign built with Dallara for a 2028 debut that promises faster lap times and enhanced safety. The car weighs about 100 pounds less than today’s chassis and uses a 2.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid producing up to 760 hp, paired with a new AXIS inertance suspension and redesigned aerodynamics, including an integrated aeroscreen and cockpit upgrades. Chevrolet and Honda back the powerplant, with testing kicking off at tracks like Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Sebring as IndyCar pursues track records and closer wheel-to-wheel racing.
