A new study suggests that an inflammatory protein called interferon gamma (IFN-y) produced by the body during Covid-19 infection may be the cause of long Covid, with high levels of IFN-y persisting in some patients for up to 31 months after initial infection. Vaccination after infection was found to decrease long Covid symptoms and IFN-y production. Researchers are hopeful that identifying this potential cause could lead to the development of medications specifically targeting long Covid, providing relief to the estimated 65 million people worldwide suffering from the condition.
