British singer Bonnie Tyler, 74, was rushed to a hospital in Faro, Portugal for emergency intestinal surgery; a spokesperson said the operation went well and she is now recuperating.
Pope Francis underwent a second intestinal surgery in two years to treat a "recurrent, painful and worsening" constriction of the intestine. The 86-year-old pontiff will be hospitalized at Rome's Gemelli hospital for several days after undergoing a laparotomy and abdominal wall plastic surgery with prosthesis. Francis had part of one lung removed when he was young and also suffers from sciatica nerve pain. The Vatican recently confirmed a travel-filled August for the pope, including a four-day visit to Portugal and a similarly long trip to Mongolia.
Pope Francis underwent intestinal surgery at Gemelli hospital in Rome, which lasted three hours and was arranged within the last few days. The surgery was successful and without complications, and the pontiff is expected to stay in the hospital for several days to recover. This is not the first time the 86-year-old pontiff has undergone surgery, having had intestinal surgery two years ago for diverticular stenosis and spending three days in the hospital in March after experiencing difficulty breathing.
