Mayor Adams' Controversial Plan Successfully Removes Mentally Ill Homeless from NYC Streets
Mayor Eric Adams celebrated the one-year anniversary of his initiative to remove mentally ill homeless individuals from the streets of New York City. Over half of the city's 100 most troubled vagrants have been taken off the streets and are receiving help, with an average of 137 individuals being transported for assistance every week. While acknowledging that there is still much work to be done, Adams emphasized the importance of providing support and care to those experiencing severe mental health issues and ensuring that no New Yorker sleeps on the street. The initiative has faced challenges, but Adams highlighted the progress made, including the relocation of 1,000 homeless people to permanent housing during this fiscal year. Legislation is also being pursued to facilitate involuntary removals and expand mental health services.
