Rise in Requests for Posthumous Sperm Retrieval Overwhelms Embryologists
Embryologists and IVF specialists are receiving an unprecedented number of requests for posthumous sperm retrieval (PSR) following the recent Hamas onslaught in Israel. Family members hope to preserve their loved ones' sperm for future conception and to continue their genetic legacy. PSR must be performed within 24 hours of death and requires court orders for unmarried men or the consent of a wife for married men. The procedure is emotionally and physically challenging for medical staff, and there is currently no established protocol for handling such a large-scale demand. Delays and bureaucratic obstacles have resulted in missed opportunities for some families, while others have successfully used their fallen loved ones' sperm for insemination or surrogacy.
