North Dakota Governor Signs Transgender Sports Bans into Law
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has signed two bills into law that ban transgender girls and women from joining female sports teams in K-12 and college. The bills were passed with veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate. At least 19 other states have imposed similar restrictions on transgender athletes. The Biden administration has proposed a rule to forbid outright bans on transgender athletes. Republican lawmakers across the US have drafted hundreds of laws this year to push back on LGBTQ+ freedoms, especially targeting transgender people’s everyday lives.
