Rocker Rick Springfield recalls fatal mortar moment in Vietnam tour
Rocker Rick Springfield revealed on the Joe Rogan Experience that, as a 17-year-old musician in 1968, he entertained U.S. troops in Vietnam and, during an attack near Da Nang, helped load mortars that hit and killed a Viet Cong fighter — a memory that haunts him as the end of a life. He described the war’s unpopularity among soldiers and noted he later wrote about the incident in his 2010 memoir, Late, Late at Night.
