Kiros Upsets DeGette in Denver-centered District as Gonzales Falters in Statewide Bid
Melat Kiros defeated long-time Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s 1st District, buoyed by organized progressive backing (Denver’s DSA and Justice Democrats). Julie Gonzales, despite insurgent credentials, lost her statewide bid to Sen. John Hickenlooper, hampered by a late start, a smaller fundraising haul (~$869k for Gonzales vs ~$610k for Kiros) and less statewide exposure, while Hickenlooper’s incumbency and broader appeal carried him across the state. The 1st District’s Denver-centered electorate (about 477k active voters) made a district race more manageable than the statewide contest (about 4.1M voters).
