Golden Tempo Claims Derby Victory, Making Derby History for Female Trainers
Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux and ridden by Jose Ortiz, won the 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, making DeVaux the first female trainer to win the Derby. The 3-year-old bay colt edged past favorite Renegade in the final stretch over 1 1/8 miles, giving Ortiz his first Derby win after 11 attempts. The field was reduced by scratches, and track conditions were fast in cooler weather.
