Former Uber Security Chief Sentenced for Data Breach Cover-Up

Former Uber security chief, Joseph Sullivan, has been sentenced to three years' probation, a $50,000 fine, and 200 hours of community service for covering up a cyber-attack in 2016. Sullivan paid hackers $100,000 to delete 57 million records of Uber customers, including names and phone numbers, and to keep the hack a secret. He was also found guilty of obstructing an investigation from the Federal Trade Commission. The judge showed leniency due to the unique nature of the case and Sullivan's character.

Former Uber Security Chief Sentenced for Data Breach Cover-Up

Joseph Sullivan, former chief security officer for Uber, has been sentenced to three years of probation and a $50,000 fine for attempting to cover up a 2016 data breach in which hackers accessed tens of millions of customer records. Sullivan was convicted of obstructing justice and concealing knowledge that a federal felony had been committed. He arranged to pay the hackers $100,000 in bitcoin in exchange for them signing non-disclosure agreements promising not to reveal the hack. Sullivan's lawyers argued that he has already suffered significant consequences because of the case.
