Russia's missile strikes on Ukraine escalate tensions.
Russian bombers fired at least eight Kh-22 missiles, also known as "Kitchen" missiles, towards Odessa, Ukraine, hitting a food company warehouse and a recreation area on the Black Sea coast. The missiles, which can carry a thermonuclear charge, were intercepted by Ukrainian air defense or self-destructed. The airstrike occurred ahead of Russia's Victory Day celebrations on May 9. The Kh-22 missile was developed in the 1960s and had never been used in combat until the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces began on February 24, 2022.
