YouTube Implements Mandatory AI-Generated Content Labeling for Creators
YouTube has introduced new rules requiring creators to label videos that feature realistic-looking content generated by AI, including altered or synthetic media. The platform defines realistic content as anything that could be easily mistaken for real. Creators must disclose the use of synthetic voices, altered footage of real events or places, and other significant edits. Failure to comply may result in penalties. The labels will start appearing on YouTube in the coming weeks, with more prominent labeling for sensitive topics. However, labels are not required for inconsequential changes or the use of generative AI for script creation or video ideas. YouTube is also working on a revamped takedown request process for altered content depicting real, identifiable individuals.
