The truth about wearing lead aprons for X-rays.

The use of lead aprons during X-ray procedures is no longer recommended by several medical organizations due to the minimal radiation exposure levels and lack of clear benefits. Lead aprons could even obscure the patient anatomy being examined in diagnostic images, requiring the procedure to be repeated, effectively doubling the radiation exposure. However, medical providers should still wear protective shielding made of lead or exit the room to reduce exposure. Facilities need to ensure that people are aware of the policy and communicate with radiologic technologists, physicists, radiologists, referring physicians, and patients as well as giving them an opportunity to ask questions about the policy.
