Construction-Phase Collapse on Old Town Bridge Injures Worker

A Stillwater Avenue bridge in Old Town, Maine—under reconstruction—collapsed around 1:45 p.m. Thursday as workers poured concrete, injuring one person who was taken to the emergency department. Dozens of Maine DOT workers were on scene; traffic was diverted to a temporary bridge that reopened by about 2:50 p.m. The cause is under investigation as MDOT continues replacement work on the Llewellyn Estes Bridge over the Stillwater River.

"Maine Eclipse Traffic: Pre and Post Event Road Congestion Hotspots"

Maine is expecting heavy traffic before and after the total solar eclipse on Monday, with the Maine Department of Transportation advising travelers to use major highways, plan routes in advance, and prepare for potential cell tower overloads. They also caution against pulling off roads due to mud season, and predict heavy traffic on Interstate 95, particularly between Waterville and Gardiner, as well as in the Lewiston/Auburn area and the southern part of I295. Travelers are urged to leave early, stay late, and drive with patience, while police and fire departments are increasing staffing for expected emergencies.
