Herzog Pardons Elor Azaria, Erasing Record After Decade of Controversy
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has granted a pardon to Elor Azaria, a combat medic convicted in 2017 for shooting a wounded Palestinian attacker in Hebron. The decision, announced on Saturday, erases Azaria’s criminal record and was influenced by the approaching Yom Kippur holiday and the passage of time. While Defense Minister Israel Katz supported the move as humane, the Chief of Staff opposed it, highlighting ongoing divisions within the military and public.
