Englandwide Martha's Rule goes live in all A&Es
England is expanding Martha’s Rule to every hospital emergency department to empower patients, families and staff to trigger urgent reviews or second opinions if a patient’s condition worsens. Named after 13-year-old Martha Mills, who died in 2021 after concerns about sepsis were not acted on, the rule follows a seven-trust pilot and will roll out nationwide by March 2028; a dedicated helpline allows rapid reviews and staff can request a different team if needed. The expansion already covers all inpatient wards, and local trusts can confirm availability on their websites. Scotland and Northern Ireland are exploring similar schemes, with Wales using a comparable Call4Concern approach.
