Twitter Faces Backlash for Labeling NPR, BBC, and PBS as 'Government Funded Media'
Twitter has changed its "state-affiliated media" label to "government funded" after receiving backlash for applying it to National Public Radio (NPR). The new label has been applied to several other news outlets that receive some state support, including the BBC, PBS, and Voice of America. The BBC has responded, stating that it is "independent" and funded by the British public through the license fee. The label links to a page on Twitter's help site that defines "state-affiliated media" as outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.
