Vancouver community holds emotional vigil for slain mother and daughter.
Hundreds of people gathered in Esther Short Park to mourn and honor Meshay Melendez and her daughter Layla Stewart, who were found dead in a rural area east of Washougal. The vigil was hosted by NWCAVE and YWCA Clark County, in conjunction with the family. Many wore red for Melendez and pink for Layla. Family, friends, and community members left flowers, balloons, cards, stuffed animals, and other trinkets on a table. The event also highlighted the need for justice and systemic changes to prevent domestic violence.
