Privacy Protection: FTC vs. Facebook and Meta

Meta (formerly Facebook) has responded to the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) accusation of not adequately protecting people's privacy, calling it a political stunt. The company claims that the events occurred years ago and that it has invested in a comprehensive privacy program that is working well. Meta also stated that it was in compliance with all of the FTC Order requirements following the first assessment and that the coding errors highlighted by the FTC occurred years ago and were quickly fixed. The company plans to vigorously fight the action and expects to prevail.

Facebook accused of misleading parents and neglecting children's privacy.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has accused Facebook of misleading parents and failing to protect the privacy of children using its Messenger Kids app. The FTC has proposed changes to a 2020 privacy order with Facebook, now called Meta, that would prohibit it from profiting from data it collects on users under 18. Meta has called the announcement a “political stunt” and said it will “vigorously fight” the FTC’s action. The proposed changes would also require Meta to pause launching new products and services without “written confirmation from the assessor that its privacy program is in full compliance” with the order.
