Fulmer Bolsters Yankees as Rotation Gaps Open Amid Injuries

The Yankees signed Michael Fulmer to a major league deal and reshuffled the roster, recalling Elmer Rodríguez and placing Fernando Cruz on the 15-day IL with right elbow discomfort, while transferring Kervin Castro to the 60-day IL to clear a 40-man spot for Fulmer. Rodríguez will start today to cover a rotation hole during a grueling ten-game-in-nine-days stretch that includes a Red Sox doubleheader, and Fulmer provides experienced bullpen depth after a strong minor-league season and prior MLB success before UCL surgery in 2024.

Chicago Cubs' Adbert Alzolay Lands on Injured List

Chicago Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain. The Cubs will reinstate Michael Fulmer from the injured list to replace Alzolay. With Alzolay out, the Cubs will likely use a closer-by-committee approach, with Fulmer, Julian Merryweather, and Mark Leiter Jr. as potential contenders for save opportunities. The Cubs currently hold a 2.5 game lead in the National League Wild Card race and trail the Milwaukee Brewers by three games in the National League Central.

"Cubs Lose Key Pitcher as Michael Fulmer Lands on 15-Day Injured List"

The Chicago Cubs have placed pitcher Michael Fulmer on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain, retroactive to August 25. Fulmer's injury history raises concerns about the severity of the strain and the potential impact on his 2023 season. The move creates a roster spot for Jordan Wicks, who will make his MLB debut as a starter against the Pirates. The Cubs' bullpen is also dealing with injuries to Brad Boxberger and Nick Burdi, while Drew Smyly will provide depth as he moves back to the bullpen. Despite the pitching challenges, the Cubs remain in the playoff race.

Dodgers dominate Cubs in 6-2 victory.

The Cubs lost to the Dodgers 6-2, ending their four-game winning streak. Both teams had a bullpen game after Dodgers starter Michael Grove left the game in the fourth due to injury. The game was tied 2-2 going into the ninth inning, but Cubs reliever Michael Fulmer gave up a grand slam to James Outman, his second homer of the game. Dodgers' walk-off win over Cubs highlights risky pitching decision.

The Los Angeles Dodgers walked off the Chicago Cubs for a 2-1 victory after Michael Fulmer threw a single pitch to David Peralta, which rolled just past a diving Nico Hoerner into right field, scoring two runs. The decision to face Peralta at all was questionable, as the tying run was on third, the winning on second with first base unoccupied, and the Dodgers' catcher, Austin Barnes, was on deck. The Cubs offense likely should have put more runs on the board to make all of this moot.

Jameson Taillon and Mark Leiter Jr. pitched well for the Cubs, while Patrick Wisdom hit a solo homer for the team's only run.
