Disguise on Demand: Mimic Octopus Shifts Into Prey, Predator Forms to Dodge Threats
Off Sulawesi, the mimic octopus Thaumoctopus mimicus can transform into three forms—flatfish, lionfish, and a banded sea snake—to imitate locally threatening species and avoid predators. It even switches to a predator-like form when harassed by damselfish, suggesting context-driven deception. The behavior, observed in field studies dating back to the late 1990s and described from a small number of individuals, remains not fully controlled or conclusively proven as a generalized strategy, but supports the idea that mimicry can be goal-directed and situation-dependent. Researchers also note the octopus’ skin-based pigment cues may help produce visible patterns despite its color vision limitations.
