A CDC study across four Atlanta-area hospitals (2020–2024) identified about 450 invasive mold disease cases, with roughly one-third of patients dying in the hospital, suggesting these infections may be more common and deadly than previously thought; the disease is not nationally reportable, complicating tracking, and experts warn climate change and aging populations could raise risk, especially for older adults and immunocompromised individuals. Hospitals may use the findings to gauge whether their caseload is typical and to improve recognition and prevention.
