Singapore Takes Lead in Regulating Stablecoin Cryptocurrencies
Singapore's financial regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has finalized rules for stablecoins, making it one of the first jurisdictions globally to do so. The rules require stablecoin issuers to hold reserves in low-risk and highly-liquid assets, provide appropriate disclosures to users, and return the par value of the digital currency to holders within five business days of a redemption request. Stablecoins that meet these requirements will be recognized as "MAS-regulated stablecoins." Singapore aims to position itself as a digital currency hub and bring more clarity to the industry, addressing concerns about the transparency of stablecoin reserves.
