FDA advisers recommend updated omicron COVID shot for fall boosters.
A panel of expert advisers to the FDA has recommended that the COVID-19 vaccine be updated to target emerging subvariants of Omicron. The committee specifically supported targeting the subvariant XBB.1.5, which accounts for about 40% of new infections in the U.S. The FDA is now going to consider the committee's discussion and will likely issue an official recommendation about the vaccine formulation within a few days, which will give vaccine makers a path to follow. If all goes according to plan, it's expected the new vaccines should be out in the fall – by around late September or early October.
