BMW's Engine Swap: From Best to Worst
BMW replaced its reliable N52 engine with the problematic N20 engine, which suffered from timing chain issues. The N52 engine, the last naturally-aspirated inline-six sold in America, offered improved reliability, power, and revs. In contrast, the N20 engine, a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, lacked character and reliability. A class action lawsuit was filed against BMW due to the defective timing chain components in the N20 engine, leading to engine damage.
