FAA Mandates Redesigned Engine Nacelles for Boeing 737 NG Following Fatal Incidents
The FAA has initiated the process to mandate nacelle design changes on the Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) fleet globally, following a fatal accident and NTSB recommendation. Three proposed rulemaking notices have been released, allowing for public comment for 45 days. The modifications, developed by Boeing and approved by the FAA, address design issues related to fan blade failures and nacelle damage. The changes include new inlet spacers and fasteners, a fan cowl support beam, and a stiffer exhaust nozzle. Operators have until July 31, 2028, to upgrade their aircraft, while Boeing has until Dec. 31, 2029, to issue maintenance instructions. The mandate affects approximately 1,900 U.S.-registered aircraft, with global implementation expected.
