Rising shores, unsettled titles: Finland’s newborn land sits in legal limbo
Finland’s coast is rebounding from the last Ice Age, adding about 700 hectares of new land each year. This vesijättö land is not automatically owned by the adjacent shore; ownership usually stays with the former water area or a shared water-body group (osakaskunta). Shoreowners can redeem the new strip via the National Land Survey, which values the land, pays compensation, and adds it to the property, at a cost of roughly €2,000–€3,000 plus taxes. The result can leave a waterfront plot that no longer reaches the water, illustrating how geology can redraw the coast while deeds remain fixed.
