Sony Bets on a Global Mascot to Rival Hello Kitty
Sony Creative Products is developing an original character IP, with Nemu the Night Owl Bear among early contenders, to anchor universal merchandise and multimedia ventures and compete with Hello Kitty, a move projected to reach about $62.8 million in annual sales by 2030. A dedicated team formed in 2025 is collaborating with creators inside and outside Sony, with plans for toys, apparel, an anime adaptation, and broader applications tied to Sony’s Generative AI initiatives.
