
Trailblazing Jazz Voice Cassandra Wilson Passes at 70
Cassandra Wilson, the Grammy-winning jazz singer and pivotal M-Base figure, died at age 70 in Jackson, Mississippi; the cause was not disclosed. She won Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1997 for New Moon Daughter and Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2009 for Loverly, was named Time’s America’s Best Singer in 2001, and released her final solo album Coming Forth by Day in 2015 as an homage to Billie Holiday.
