Sinn Féin dominates Northern Ireland local elections, adds pressure on DUP.

Sinn Féin emerges as the largest party in local government in Northern Ireland after the council elections, with individual success stories and disappointments. DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson's home constituency sees a shock as Lisburn and Castlereagh Mayor Scott Carson loses his seat to independent Gary Hynds. Newly-elected Alliance councillor Lewis Boyle has to balance his celebrations with his upcoming A-Level exams. UUP's Ryan McCready delivers the magic by topping the poll in Faughan for Derry City and Strabane District Council. PUP's leader Billy Hutchinson is knocked out, leaving the party with no representation in Belfast.

Sinn Féin dominates Northern Ireland council elections.

Sinn Féin has won a historic victory in the Northern Ireland council elections, securing 144 seats and leaving the DUP trailing 22 seats behind. The Alliance Party leapfrogged the Ulster Unionists to become the third-largest local-government party, while the UUP and SDLP suffered heavy losses. The DUP's Stormont boycott helped mobilise the nationalist vote, but many unionists stayed at home. The party's gains at the expense of the UUP have left Sir Jeffrey Donaldson with a renewed mandate to seek changes to the Windsor Framework before returning to Stormont.
