The 76th annual Tony Awards, which aired on CBS on Sunday, was watched by 4.3 million viewers, marking the most-watched show since 2019. The ceremony was also historic as Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee became the first-ever openly nonbinary performers to win Tonys. The unscripted ceremony was held in compliance with the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, with Ariana DeBose serving as host and opening the show with a wordless dance number in solidarity with the writers. The Tonys pre-show on Pluto TV also became the most-watched live event ever since the free ad-supported platform launched in 2013.
