Trial Begins for Former Oil Firm Executives Accused of Sudan War Crimes in Sweden
Former CEO and chairman of a Swedish oil firm, Lundin Oil, are on trial in Sweden, accused of complicity in war crimes in Sudan between 1999 and 2003. Prosecutors allege that the executives asked Khartoum to secure an oilfield in what is now South Sudan, knowing it would involve seizing the area by force. The company denies the allegations, and the trial is expected to run until early 2026. The prosecution is also seeking to confiscate 2.4 billion Swedish crowns ($217 million) from the company. Sudan waged war for decades in South Sudan, and former president Omar al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide and other war crimes.
