Fred R. Harris, Former Senator and Presidential Candidate, Dies at 94

Fred R. Harris, a former Oklahoma senator and member of the Kerner Commission, has died at 94. Known for his liberal populist views, Harris was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party during the 1960s and 70s, advocating for civil rights and social welfare. He served on the Kerner Commission, which investigated racial unrest in the U.S., and ran for president twice. After leaving politics, Harris taught political science and authored numerous books. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Elliston, and three children from his first marriage.
