Coastal Croatian town hit by wildfire; 36 injured
A powerful wildfire driven by strong winds swept into Omis on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, burning about 2,470 acres and forcing around 1,000 people to evacuate, with 36 injured (14 hospitalized, seven in life-threatening condition). Emergency shelters opened from Omis to Split as firefighters and four aircraft battled the flames and a major coastal highway was shuttered. Prime Minister Plenkovic traveled to Omis as heat and drought continue to fuel wildfires across Europe, threatening the summer tourist season.
