Oakland-Berkeley Hills Fire Damages One Home on 1991 Firestorm Anniversary

A vegetation fire ignited at 11:45 a.m. on October 20, 2026, in the Oakland-Berkeley hills near Panoramic Way, marking the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm. The blaze, which burned between 1.5 and 3 acres, damaged one residential home but resulted in no injuries or evacuations. Multiple agencies, including Oakland and Berkeley fire departments, Cal Fire, and the East Bay Regional Parks District, coordinated a response that contained the fire by early afternoon. Officials credited improved regional communication systems and infrastructure upgrades since 1991 for preventing a larger disaster, noting that current weather conditions were less severe than those of the 1991 event.
