Celtics owner Bill Chisholm said he needed convincing from the team’s front office before approving the Jaylen Brown trade, insisting he trusted the “best brains in basketball.” The deal, motivated by cap realities with Brown and Jayson Tatum on supermax contracts, sends Brown out and brings Paul George and draft picks to Boston. George, 36, is expected to contribute alongside Tatum as Boston aims to stay near the top of the East, though the move underscores the NBA’s second apron/tax constraints and has fans weighing loyalty to Brown.

Boston’s front office framed the Jaylen Brown trade as a strategic move to unlock future flexibility under the current CBA, trading Brown for Paul George and draft assets to pair a star with Jayson Tatum while adding depth through multiple picks. They cited ‘optionality’ and the need to avoid a salary-cap bottleneck that could hinder championship contention, noted no input from Tatum, and addressed Brown’s treatment and perception as part of maintaining a top destination for players.

The Philadelphia 76ers pulled off a blockbuster deal to acquire Jaylen Brown by sending Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-rounders, reportedly shedding George’s contract in the process. Brown immediately upgrades Philly’s core with a 28.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 5.1 APG stat line from last season, making Philly a formidable title contender and potentially a deep playoff threat next year—even as some roster holes remain.
After trading Jaylen Brown to the 76ers for Paul George and a draft haul, the Celtics project a 2026-27 rotation led by Jayson Tatum with Payton Pritchard at point, Derrick White at guard, George on the wing, Tatum at forward and Neemias Queta at center. Veterans like Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley are added for depth, with Robinson potentially coming off the bench if Queta sticks as starter. The bench also features players such as Dalano Banton, Sam Hauser, Baylor Scheierman and Jordan Walsh, and Boston will rely on these role players to stay healthy while navigating injuries and depth questions on the road back to a title.

The deal reflects a clash between management’s assessment of Brown’s value (and his max salary’s roster-cost implications) and Brown’s perceived impact, with rival teams balking at Boston’s high asking price in a lukewarm market. Despite Brown’s career-best season and leadership, the Celtics pursued a roster balance they believed would better pair with Jayson Tatum, while the Sixers added veteran star power, making this a pivotal, controversial recalibration for both teams.
