Canadian man convicted of animal cruelty for stealing Las Vegas flamingo
Mitchell Fairbarn, a 34-year-old Canadian, was found guilty on Monday of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty for stealing and injuring a flamingo named Peachy from the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in March 2026. The jury, consisting of eight women and six men, deliberated for five hours before returning the verdict. Fairbarn, who appeared emotionless in court, faces sentencing on December 1, with potential prison time of up to four years for the felony count and six months for the misdemeanor. The bird, a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo, has recovered physically but remains anxious. Prosecutors argued the act was malicious, while the defense claimed it was a drunken prank.
