An Oregon resident has contracted bubonic plague from a pet cat, according to public health officials. The case was identified and treated in its early stages, posing little risk to the community. Symptoms of the disease include fever, nausea, weakness, chills, and muscle aches, and it can lead to more severe infections if not diagnosed early. All close contacts of the person and the cat have been provided with medication, and the last reported case of bubonic plague in Oregon was in 2015.
