Chile's Search for the Disappeared: Unearthing the Remains and Memories
Chile is launching a National Search Plan to find the remains of the 1,469 people who disappeared during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. The plan involves consolidating and digitizing judicial case files, exploring known or suspected burial sites, and testing remains. However, the effort does not include questioning military members or collaborators. Many remains were destroyed by Pinochet's orders, leaving only fragments to be found. The search is a significant step by the government, as previously, family members, mostly women, have been leading the fight for answers.
