"Unlocking Celestial Secrets: Sodium's Transformation Under High Pressure"

Researchers at the University at Buffalo have conducted a study, published in Angewandte Chemie, that explains the high-pressure transformation of sodium from a metal to an insulator through quantum chemical calculations. Contrary to previous beliefs that electrons are squeezed out of atoms under extreme pressure, the study shows that these electrons remain chemically bonded, forming localized charge concentrations in the interstitial regions, a state known as an electride. This research not only sheds light on the behavior of elements like sodium under high pressure but also has implications for understanding the interiors of stars and planets, potentially informing us about their evolution and magnetic fields.
