Fed study eyes through-running and platform upgrades to boost Penn Station capacity without razing a Midtown block
A federal preliminary study proposes increasing Penn Station capacity by about one-third through platform extensions, more stairs and entrances, and a limited through-running plan between NJ Transit and LIRR. Achieving this would avoid demolishing a Midtown block but require a “super-wide” platform and removal of two tracks; morning capacity could rise to 32 trains per hour and about 30 per hour in the evening (from 24 today). A follow-up study in 2028 will examine costs, with potential 2038 capacity up to 48 trains per hour if Hudson River tunnels are built and related projects proceed.
