An 8-year-old boy who got lost in Michigan's Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park survived by eating clean snow and covering himself with leaves for warmth. Nante Niemi, 8, of Hurley, Wis., was found safe Monday afternoon about two miles from his family's campsite after being missing for about 48 hours. He had been collecting firewood with a group when he got lost on his way back to the campsite. He was wearing a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and boots, and had no gear or food with him. He stayed warm and safe by hiding under a log and covering up with branches and leaves. He ate clean snow to stay hydrated.
An 8-year-old boy from Wisconsin who went missing while collecting firewood in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park was found safe near a log by a volunteer after a dayslong search involving over 150 search and rescue personnel. The boy was about 2 miles from his family's campsite and appears to be in good health. The remote, hilly terrain and seasonal roads with remaining snow made the search difficult.
Police have released the identity of an 8-year-old Wisconsin boy, Nante Niemi, who went missing on May 6 while camping with his family in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. More than 150 search and rescue personnel, including nine K9 units, are searching a roughly 40-square-mile area on foot. The park has closed the Presque Isle Day Use area until further notice while the search continues. The terrain is very remote and hilly with a lot of standing water due to the time of the year.
