Ponomarev, who is fighting for Ukrainian independence, is part of a Russian parliament-in-exile called the Congress of People's Deputies, which aims to prepare for a post-Putin Russia. While expressing gratitude for U.S. aid to Ukraine, Ponomarev urges the United States to think about the endgame in the war and encourages Russians to be the ones to bring about regime change. He believes that Ukraine retaking Crimea could be the catalyst for political changes in Russia.
