Liechtenstein Prince Alois Vetoes Abortion Reform, Citing Protection of Unborn Life
Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein exercised his veto for the first time in his reign to block a bill legalizing abortion up to 12 weeks. The legislation, backed by nearly a quarter of voters and passed by parliament, was rejected on grounds of protecting unborn life. Campaigners expressed disappointment but noted that abortions will continue to occur abroad, while the prince signaled openness to lifting bans on information sharing.
