Massive Pro-EU Rally in Moldova Draws Tens of Thousands
Tens of thousands of Moldovans rallied in the capital, Chisinau, to demand EU membership for their country, which became a candidate country last year. President Maia Sandu said Moldova wanted to join the EU by 2030 as protection against any threat from Russia. The government ran information campaigns inviting people to attend the rally, and put on more public transport on Sunday to make it easier for them. EU membership could take a decade or more to attain, given the long list of requirements candidate countries must meet to be able to sit alongside the other nations in the European single market.
