Kevin Monahan, 66, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for fatally shooting 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis, who was mistakenly on his property in upstate New York. The group of friends had pulled into Monahan’s driveway in the dark while looking for a party, and despite realizing their mistake and turning around, Monahan fired a second shot, killing Gillis. Monahan claimed the fatal shot was an accident and that he believed the house was under siege, but prosecutors argued that he was motivated by irrational rage. Gillis's father described her as someone who loved animals and had dreams of becoming a marine biologist or a veterinarian, while her boyfriend expressed his inability to forgive Monahan.
