Newton Minow, Former FCC Chief Who Criticized TV, Dies at 97
Newton N. Minow, the former Federal Communications Commission chairman who famously called TV a "vast wasteland" in 1961, died at the age of 97. Minow helped shape public television, satellite communications, and presidential debates. He was a politically connected Chicago legal grandee and boardroom Zelig whose professional life encompassed nearly every part of the communications business over six decades.
